Two pit bulls reportedly attacked and killed a pet chihuahua named “Rex” on Oct. 10 and are now in the possession of Tazewell County Animal Control.

East Peoria police were called to 111 Loren St. in Sunnyland shortly before 7:30 p.m. with a report of a dog attack.

Upon investigation, the complainant explained that she was walking her chihuahua on a leash in her front yard when a woman walked by in the street with what appeared to be two pit bulls, according to a police report.

She was unable to restrain the dogs before they charged after the chihuahua and attacked and killed him.

The chihuahua’s owner ran inside to call the police, and when she went back outside, the two dogs and the woman were gone.

Later police retrieved two pit bull mixes that matched the description at a nearby house.

Tazewell County Animal Control took possession of the animals. The pit bull owner was cited for destruction of private property and a hearing is set for the last week of October, said Jaymee Harms, an officer at Tazewell County Animal Control.

“If they are deemed vicious, they can be put down or (the owner) must jump through many hoops to get them back,” Harms said.

The names of the persons involved were not  made available by East Peoria police or Tazewell County Animal Control.
