East Peoria added another layer to its fabulous 2012 girls tennis season.

The Raiders collected third-place honors at the Dunlap Sectional and a doubles team advanced to the Illinois High School Association state final.

Nicole Montgomery and Jessica Smith, both seniors, earned a return berth at state after winning the doubles championship Saturday.

The East Peoria netters defeated duos from Notre Dame, Dunlap and Richwoods before a 6-3, 7-5 victory in the final against Becca Eller and Melissa Ringenberg of Metamora.

Montgomery and Smith will attempt to improve on last year's 0-1 mark.

Inclement weather Saturday forced the championship and third-place matches indoors after the first day's action was staged at Dunlap's nine-court facility.

The Raiders had 18 points, four more than fourth-place Metamora.

Dunlap was the sectional champion with 24 points.

State: Action in the double-elimination tournament begins Thursday and runs through Saturday in the Chicago suburbs.
Buffalo Grove High School is the tournament central site.

Montgomery and Smith will make their second appearance.
