East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus has come full circle in his career. After 36 years, he is back where he started in the mental health field.
Mingus has taken a position at the Tazwood Mental Health Center.
For the past 12 years, Mingus served as director of Neighborhood House in Peoria. Mingus said leaving that organization was "tough."
"I felt the good Lord led me in this direction and it all fell into place," Mingus said.
Mingus has a master's degree in counseling and human development. He began his career in the mental health field.
"I've always had an interest in mental health," Mingus said.
For the past three years, Mingus was asked to serve on the Tazwood Mental Health Board. About one-and-a-half years ago, the CEO of that organization left and Mingus was asked if he was interested in that position. He declined, but offered to help out where he could.
A few month ago, the CEO position opened again, and Mingus went for it. He is now working part-time in that role.
"This is an interesting job," he said.
"The board identified they wanted the agency to go in a different direction," Mingus said. "We've established a management team. My philosophy is you have to have a good staff."
Mingus said one of his goals in his new role is to diversify the clientele that utilizes the services at the health center. He said clients come first.
Tazwood Mental Health Center is a private, non-profit organization that offers comprehensive mental health and substance abuse services.
It has locations in Pekin, East Peoria and Eureka. The East Peoria location is now at the Regions Bank building, 111 W. Washington St.
