For those with gamers on their Christmas shopping list, there is a new place to purchase gaming systems, games and accessories.
GameStop opened in East Peoria Dec. 6. The business is located at 201 River Road in part of the former TGI Fridays building. The restaurant closed over the summer.
Titan Construction of Delaware did construction on the building and finished in late November. William Torchia owns the building.
Ty Livingston, director of community development, planning and zoning, said GameStop's building permit is a couple of weeks old. He added that where GameStop is on the left side of the building is about 2,000 square feet. The right side of the building still has about 4,000 square feet of available space.
Livingston said there is a lot of interest for the remaining space likely due to the high-traffic location at the entrance to Walmart and Bass Pro.
“This one's not likely to stay dark for very long,” Livingston said.
GameStop's website lists the stores merchandise as gaming systems, such as Xbox, PS3, WiiU, 3DS, Nintendo DS and more. They also carry games, accessories, headsets, phones, tablets, laptops and media players. Some of the top games listed are Halo 4, Call of Duty Black Ops II, Far Cry 3 and The Sims 3.
There is another GameStop is Washington at 1968 Freedom Parkway. When a new game is released, the store opens at midnight. Long lines of gamers wait in anticipation.
The same type of event will occur at the East Peoria location.
Attempts to speak with someone at GameStop's corporate officers were unsuccessful.
The new store's hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.
The phone number is 694-2253.
