The Knights of Columbus Youth Free Throw Championship rounds are about to begin.
Entries are free to all boys and girls ages 10-14.
Local competitions will name a champion in each of 10 divisions — five for girls and five for boys.
The local East Peoria competition is set to start at 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at Central Junior High School, 601 Taylor St., in the old gym.
Each of the 10 local champions will continue to the district competition, also to be held at CJHS immediately following the local competition.
Entry forms will be available at the door, at the Fon du Lac Park District administration building, at the CJHS office and at the East Peoria Community High School office.
District winners will advance to the regional championships in March in Princeville.
The regional winners will go on to the state championships in April in Springfield.
Many of last year's winners will return to compete in the next age bracket.
The local area has had numerous regional and state champions as well as at least one international champion, from Morton, in the past few years.
More than 130,000 youths participated in the contest throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines. There were about 3,400 local level competition sites involved.
The Knights of Columbus has sponsored and provided volunteers for the Free Throw Championships for the last 45 years.
Boys and girls in the 10-11 age groups will shoot free throws from a line 12 feet from the basket. Both groups will shoot with a women's regulation size basketball.
The 12- through 14-year-old girls will shoot with a women's regulation-size ball 15 feet from the basket.
The 12- through 14-year-old boys will shoot with a men's regulation ball 15 feet from the basket.
Age eligibility is determined by the contestant's age on Jan. 1, 2013. Proof of age will be required.
