Washington- Elmer C. Palanza, 89 of Washington, died at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at his home. Born Jan. 10, 1924, in Peoria, to the late Edward and Rose Cambria Palanza, he married Irma Kirchgessner on April 15, 1944, in Peoria. She preceded him in death on April 23, 1990. He then married Patricia Sommer Sept. 13, 1997. She survives. Also surviving are two sons and two daughters, Chuck (Barbara) Palanza of Jacksonville, Fla., Vickie (Rodger) Kaeb of Washington, Teresa (Greg) Pearce of Washington and Chris (Lilia) Palanza of Washington; Elmer’s step-children, Crystal Etter of Trivoli, Linda (Greg) Dissman of Longwood, Fla., Bruce Etter of Jacksonville, Fla. and Holly Johnson of Mound, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clara (Roberto) Palmieri of Peoria and Philomena Palanza of Peoria. He was preceded in death by a brother Edward Palanza and a grandson Nick Palanza. Elmer and his father started Palanza’s Family Restaurant in Sunnyland in 1957 retiring in 1982. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion in Spring Bay, K of C Council #7580 and St. Monica Catholic Church in East Peoria and the Elks Lodge #2605 in Orange Park, Fla. Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. Monica’s Catholic Church in East Peoria. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria. Military Honors will be rendered by Tazewell Military Rites Team. Visitation will take place from 3-7 p.m. Friday at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and on Saturday at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Methodist Hospice, St. Jude’s Children Hospital or the American Diabetes Association.
