Bridget Bankes will play the hot corner for Heartland Community College.
The East Peoria Community High School senior revealed Thursday she will attend the Normal junior college and play softball for the Hawks.
“I like the girls and I’m excited with what they have going for them,” Bankes said.
She also mentioned a long-time good relationship with Steve Leverton, a Heartland assistant coach and one of her travel-team coaches with the East Peoria Express.
Additionally, Bankes cited the synthetic-turf Corn Crib the Hawks play on that is the home of the Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League.
Bankes figures she is anchored at third base, a position she has played since age 8.
The Raider plans to get stronger and hit a lot to prepare for the jump to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II level.
Bankes realizes she will have less time to react at the plate and get used to different types of breaks on pitches.
Heartland is guided by head coach John Bassett, who is 96-36 in his first two years.
Bankes, who said it was a relief to get her college decision finalized, has played travel softball since she was 9 years old.
Her attention is squarely on
