East Peoria Now Has a "Brooklyn" Bridge on N. Main

Mounted on cables in exactly the same manner as the Brooklyn Bridge but on a much smaller scale, the foot bridge has been constructed across Farm Creek on North Main street by Doering Brothers, local contractors.

As the Brooklyn bridge the cables extend from higher levels at each end and curve to a low railing in the center. Instead of a high tower, however, these cables swing from a seven foot post to a two foot rail at the center.

As all small suspension bridges, this one sways as the pedestrians walk over it, weaving up and down. The sway is not caused by weakness but by the flexibility of the cables.

The bridge itself is quite an engineering feat and is imune (sic) from the dangers of high waters. The towers are anchored deep into the earth by heavy cables.
