When It Rains, It Pours

One of the biggest questions I have is why do problems all come at the same time?  There may be days, weeks, even months of smooth sailing and then, boom!  Everything seems to fall apart.

I asked that question many times this week. My car had developed a severe oil leak somewhere.....my radiator hose began leaking.....and a pipe in my basement began to leak.

Of course, the auto parts store did not have the right hose for my car, so I had to order it, which means I have a few days to make sure my car doesn’t blow up.  Why don’t I just take it to the dealer to have it fixed?  Because with my car, there are no inexpensive repairs.  I just don’t want to spend several hundred dollars for something I can fix myself.  And, I know that I am going to have to spend money to have the oil leak fixed.

Yesterday morning, I tried to fiddle with the leaky pipe in the basement.  If you know anything about plumbing, you know that when you fiddle, it almost never gets better.  Yes, the leak got worse and so I was forced to fix it.  Because this is an older home, fixes over the years have not necessarily been done in the most professional manner.

I spent yesterday trying to piece together a fix, and after 4 trips to Lowe’s, the leak was even worse.  So, around 10:30, I put a bucket under the leak and decided to head to bed. At this point, I was very discouraged.  The prospect of not going to church the next morning was getting me down.  I knew I was going to have to rebuild the entire plumbing connection and this wasn’t going to be easy for an amateur plumber like myself.

Praise the Lord that Lowe’s opens at 8:00 on Sunday.  I was there when they opened and got the parts I needed.  As I drove home, a song came on the radio, “You Never Let Go”, by Matt Redman.  The lyrics include:

And I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare.
And there will be an end to these troubles
     But until that day comes
We’ll live to know You here on the earth.

God began to remind me that, even though troubles are inevitable, He is with me and one day there won’t be trouble.  He reminded me of the blessings that I have in my life.  Troubles have a way to blinding us to all the things that God has blessed us with.

Even in the midst of troubles, try to focus on the goodness of God in your life and remember that He doesn’t let go.  And, the biggest blessing of all?  I was able to fix the leak and make it to church.  Praise God!!
