Renovations of Sunnyland Plaza could start as soon as mid to late summer.
After a year of extensive planning, the buildings in Sunnyland Plaza, which have stood vacant for as long as four years, are in the works of being updated and reoccupied.
The main businesses currently in the Plaza are the Washington Library, Dollar General and the Sunnyland Cinema.
Currently, ACS Properties LLC owns the property.
According to Sunnyland Plaza developer Raymond Poe, changes to the Plaza will be seen soon. Poe explained the longevity of the vacant buildings as a result of the “big box spaces that were constructed down the street for the likes of Walmart, Target and Kroger.”
“The 40,000-square-foot space in Sunnyland is functionally obsolete,” said Poe. “The redevelopment plan aims to reconfigure this space and others to cut them up into smaller pieces to fill the demand for smaller space users.”
According to Poe the average size of these smaller buildings would be between 5,000 and 10,000 square feet. These smaller users, in Poe’s projected plan, would be restaurants, a possible coffee shop like Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks and a fast food chain.
