Nov. 30 marked the last time Commissioner Mike Unes took a seat  to the left of East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus in City Hall.

Unes, who is representative-elect of the 91st District, thanked the city of East Peoria, council members and city staff during his last council meeting.

“It’s been a wonderful opportunity, one that I’ve cherished and worked hard at every day,” Unes said during the meeting. “I believe we have worked well together even at times when we didn’t agree. We worked really hard, all of us, to find a common ground and to find solutions.”

Unes defeated Democrat Mike Smith, a 16-year incumbent, Nov. 2.

Having recently completed new member training in Springfield, he will be sworn into office Jan. 12.

“I’m sad to leave this council, but I’m also extremely excited for the opportunity that lays before me,” said Unes, who has served on the city council since April 2007. “We are going to be faced with some difficult challenges that I’m ready to hit, tackle head on. I look forward to continuing to serve the city of East Peoria and all of the 91st District.”

Council members also took turns making congratulatory remarks.

“I want to take this opportunity to wish commissioner Unes well in his new position,” said Commissioner Gary Densberger, who will help with Unes’ council duties until another commissioner is appointed. “His success will mean good things for this community.”

Added Commissioner Tim Jeffers, “As you go to Springfield, you can help send back that $600 and some thousand they owe us. We’re in line. ... You have a big assignment ahead of you, and I wish you well.”

Mingus also presented Unes a plaque engraved with a pledge made by the council four years ago.

“I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to serve with you the last, almost four years,” said Mingus. “We’ll miss you, but you’ve done a good job, and you’ve been a real asset to our community.”

Mingus said he will appoint someone to fill Unes’ seat within 30 days. He added there are a number of individuals who have expressed interest.
