Surrounded by friends and family inside a familiar coffee shop in town — a place where he can be seen weekly visiting with members of the community — East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus announced he will run for a second term as mayor.
“I have coffee here every single Wednesday,” Mingus said Nov. 24 inside of Eysal’s Coffee Roaster. “I feel very humbled that people came to join me.”
Serving 12 years as a commissioner on East Peoria’s City Council before becoming mayor, Mingus’ first term expires in April.
Mingus said he looks forward to the economic challenges ahead and the ongoing development in the city.
He cited the Bass Pro Shops development and the progress of Downtown 2010, both of which construction is under way on.
“We do everything we can do to bring development into East Peoria and the region,” he said. “We’ll put the red carpet out for small businesses. We’ll put the red carpet out for big businesses.”
Mingus said he has greatly enjoyed serving the residents of East Peoria.
“(Constituents) can call me any time, day or night. I’ll be there to listen. I’m human, and I want to do what’s best.”
Among those at Eysal’s showing their support was Superintendent of District 309 Chuck Nagel.
“The mayor has been a big supporter of education,” he said. “He’s always been available for us, and he’s always been willing to step up.”
Added East Peorian Frank Borror, “We’re happy with what he’s done, and we hope he can continue it. ... We’re lucky.”
According to Mingus he had no reservations about running for reelection.
“This will be my last term though,” he said. “It makes me more committed than ever to do everything I can to serve the people.”
Nominating petitions are now available at City Hall, 100 S. Main St., for the spring 2011 election.
They can be filed between Dec. 13 through Dec. 20. So far, Mingus does not have an
opponent.
