Schock, Schilling introduce legislation in House

Congressmen Aaron Schock, R-IL, and Bobby Schilling, R-IL, introduced the 1099K Overreach Prevention Act Feb. 1, which will prohibit the Internal Revenue Service from implementing a new tax reporting requirement that would have far reaching implications for small business owners nationwide.

Unes releases statement on Quinn's State of the State address

State Rep. Mike Unes (R-East Peoria) called Gov. Quinn’s State of the State Address “a mile wide and an inch deep” in regards to fixing our state’s fiscal problems.

“I welcome the Governor’s call to work together, just as legislators did in the House this past year on the budget,” said Unes on Wednesday after the address. “However, he skimmed past the necessary reforms, and I never once heard him mention the nearly $9 billion deficit in our state. We’re going to have to dig much deeper for the solutions to these problems caused by years of mismanagement by state officials.”

Awards given, business community lauded at chamber dinner

Although the weather on Friday evening was cold and snowy, the mood inside the Par-A-Dice ballroom was the opposite.

Local and state dignitaries were present at the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner, and they all spoke highly of the city’s growth and the development still to come.

Michael Heisley, the founder of Heico Companies, CEO of several company subsidiaries and majority owner of the Memphis Grizzlies, delivered the keynote address, and spoke of his business background and why he expects the economy to rebound in the near future.

Uftring Auto Group named 2011's 'Company of the Year'

Every day, thousands of central Illinois residents see and hear his name, and on Jan. 27, his name was called out at as an award winner at the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce Dinner.

Gary Uftring, dealer principal and president of the Uftring Auto Group, had his chain of automobile dealerships chosen as Company of the Year for 2012 by the East Peoria Chamber. The auto group, which has six locations throughout the region, does business in East Peoria at one of their locations.

Waste Management take 'Green Company of the Year' award

As the 21st century has progressed, more and more of an emphasis has been placed on environmentally friendly practices.

And as recycling has become more important, one company in East Peoria has been there to adapt as the “green” technology as evolved.

Waste Management, which has its local offices based in East Peoria, was named Green Company of the Year in 2011 by the East Peoria Chamber of Commerce for its efforts to keep the community and region environmentally friendly.

Unes named 'Distinguished Citizen of the Year' for 2011

State Rep. Mike Unes has worn many hats over the last few years.

He has worked as a network administrator for an accounting firm, coached two youth basketball leagues, was elected to the East Peoria City Council and representative for the state of Illinois.

And in the first weeks of 2012, he’s able to add another title to his resume: distinguished citizen of the year.
The East Peoria Chamber of Commerce bestowed this honor upon Unes, 37, who has repeatedly given back to the city during his tenure as a resident of the east side of the river.

Groundwater Professional Conference to be held in EP

The Illinois Association of Groundwater Professionals will host its 2012 annual meeting and expo Feb. 9-10 at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Riverfront Conference Center.  The convention is an opportunity for contractors, regulatory agencies and manufacturers to come together to share information about new technology and regulations.

EP man pinned between two cars in parking lot

An East Peoria man was treated and released from a local hospital Sunday after he became pinned between two cars.

Officers responded around 2 p.m. Sunday to 1628 N. Henderson St. after learning that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, police reports stated. When they arrived, they found Thomas Hassan, 37, slumped against the side of his car.

East Peoria named 'progressive city' by Ameren

East Peoria’s business community has been known for its rapid growth, but it received an honor for a different reason last week.

On Jan. 23, Ameren CILCO announced that East Peoria was one of four municipalities to be given the “Most Progressive Local City” award.

Graduation requirements adjusted by District 309 board

Beginning in the fall of 2012, East Peoria Community High School students will only need to pass two years of science to be eligible for graduation.

The change, approved at District 309’s Jan. 23 meeting, lessens the requirement by one year.

Schock visits EPCHS, speaks to students about his past

When Congressman Aaron Schock graduated from Richwoods High School, he had already completed 57 college credits, purchased real estate and had an established retirement account, which he opened when he was in seventh grade.

He was also a registered voter whose first experience casting a ballot eventually lead to his write-in election to the District 150 School Board, spurring his political career.

Proposed oil pipeline would cut through Tazewell County

A portion of a proposed $1.9 billion pipeline to carry crude oil from Illinois to Oklahoma before heading south to refineries on the Gulf Coast would cut through parts of Livingston, Woodford, Tazewell, Mason and Fulton counties.

Being called the Flanagan South Pipeline, the large-scale project by Alberta-based Enbridge Inc. would parallel much of the oil shipper’s already existing 650-mile Spearhead Pipeline from Flanagan to Cushing, Okla., site of one of the nation’s largest storage facilities for crude oil.

ICC to host leadership program beginning Feb. 2

The Professional Development Institute at Illinois Central College will continue its “Inspiring Leadership” Certificate Program beginning Feb. 2.

Tazewell County sets GED testing dates for February

The Tazewell Regional Office of Education is accepting applications for persons wishing to register for GED testing for the month of February.

Testing dates and times are at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 14 and 15.

PACVB President/CEO Bob Marx Resigns

Bob Marx, President/CEO of the Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, resigned Friday from his position.  Marx had been with the bureau since March 2010.
 
“Bob brought a lot of new ideas to the bureau that the Peoria area benefitted from,” said Sherril West, PACVB Board Chairman.  “One of those was getting the PACVB accredited by the Destination Marketing Accreditation Program.”
