Individuals and families can stay fit and have fun at the YWCA of Pekin located at 315 Buena Vista Avenue.

Executive director, Melinda Figge, said that their summer programs offer ways to stay fit inside especially during inclement weather.

“Sometimes we are people’s back-up plan if the weather is bad for outdoor pools,” Figge said. “We’re an option for when the heat is too much. It is an advantage for us to have indoor programs. We have a lot of seniors who take advantage with water fitness classes and our popular Silver Sneakers Program.”

There are three water fitness classes offered at the indoor pool. Aqua aerobics, arthritis/fibromyalgia and hydo-fit/aqua jog classes are available in the mornings and/or evenings. The fee for members only is $7 per class or punch cards are available.

Those looking for swimming laps can do so at the designated times. Lap swimming is available for both members and non-members. Payments may be made at each visit, a punch card may be purchased or an annual swim pass for purchase are all options.

Swim lessons are also available. Registration for Session 4 runs July 10-15. Classes start July 17 and run through Sept. 9. There are aquatic programs for ages 6 months through adult. The infant and preschool program is for children ages 6-months-old through 5-years-old. Their learn to swim group lessons are for children 6-years-old and up. The YWCA of Pekin also offers private and semi-private swim lessons.

All ages are welcome to participate in the adaptive aquatics class. It is designed to provide more individualized instruction to those with learning or physical disabilities.

Special Olympics swimming is offered to any swimmer 8-years-old and up who has a physical and/or learning disability. Classes are 40-minutes long.

In addition to water fitness, the YWCA of Pekin also has land fitness classes. Silver Sneakers meets three times a week. The class is designed to increase range of motion and increase muscular strength. A chair is available for support to any individual in class.

T’ai Chi is a class for adults. Senior citizens ages 60 and up are eligible for a discounted price of six classes for $18. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays and offers three levels: beginner, exercise and intermediate.

Yoga Strength is the third land fitness class. This 45-minute class meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. Participants may pay per class or purchase a punch card.

The YWCA of Pekin also has a cardio-weight room. Karate classes are available to those 7-years-old and up. Participants are required to be YWCA of Pekin members. There are price breaks for families who have more than one family member registered for karate classes.

Staying healthy is important to those who work at the YWCA. As such, they regularly have the Methodist Wellmobile visit. The next visit will be Sept. 21 from 8-11 a.m. They provide blood pressure reading, blood sugar and cholesterol screening (12-hour fasting required) and a spirometry test. No appointments are necessary and the service is free.
