PEKIN — An apartment complex in Pekin caught fire in the early hours of Friday morning, sending one person to the hospital and causing $25,000 in damage.
Firefighters responded to a multi-story apartment complex in the 300 block of Ann Eliza Street at 4:54 a.m. and saw fire coming from a first floor apartment, according to a release sent out by the Pekin Fire Department. Residents from the first and second floors of the apartment complex were evacuated.
One person sustained significant injuries from the fire and was transported to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, according to the release. Another resident was treated on-site for a minor injury caused when evacuating the building.
Firefighters determined the cause of the fire to be careless disposal of smoking materials, the release stated. Eight of the 14 apartment units had significant smoke damage, and two apartment units had fire damage. The building sustained $25,000 in smoke and fire damage.
