The Pekin boys golf team finished second Monday at the Class 3A Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional, two strokes behind Lincoln-Way Central, and advanced to the state tournament as a team for the 25th time in school history and first time since 2012.

Mason Ghidina shot 74 at Balmoral Woods Golf Course and Mason Minkel carded 76 to lead the Dragons to a collective 311 in Crete. Ghidina tied for second in the individual standings behind Orland Park Sandburg’s Max Farley, who shot 72.

Pekin’s Jack Halstead finished with 80 and teammate Jacob Hill had 81.

The 3A state tournament is Friday and Saturday at The Den in Bloomington.

Morton moves on: Tommy Kuhl shot 3-under-par 69 Monday at the Orange Course in Savoy to finish second individually in the Class 2A Champaign Central Sectional and propel the Morton boys golf team to its fourth consecutive trip to the 2A state tournament.

The Potters finished third with a 309 total behind first-place Champaign Central (302) and runner-up Normal U-High (304).

Bobby Strode shot 76, Isaac Ingold 80 and Connor Vicary 84 to round out the scoring for Morton. Champaign Central’s Justin McCoy shot 67 to win medalist honors.

Peoria Notre Dame was fourth in the team stadnings, 15 strokes behind Morton.

Matthew Cox of East Peoria carded 73 and was among four area golfers to advance to state as individuals. He was joined by IVC’s Hunter Mettille, who also shot 73, Mikey Wales (77) of Notre Dame and Matt Leist (77) of Dunlap.

The 2A state tournament is Friday and Saturday at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal.
