A Tazewell County jail inmate told another he planned to stab a pregnant jail guard with a self-made knife, charges filed Thursday allege.
Bryan Arnold, 28, of Delavan, admitted he made the knife, commonly known as a shiv, that corrections officers found in his cell, but only for self protection, according to a prosecutor’s court affidavit.
He was charged Thursday with possessing a weapon in a penal institution, a Class 1 felony punishable by four to 15 years in prison. Bond was set at $30,000 pending his next court date on Dec. 21.
Arnold has been jailed in the Tazewell County Justice Center since Nov. 8 on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle and unlawful use of a credit card.
Another inmate told jail officers on Nov. 18 that Arnold stated he had a shiv and “was going to stab the pregnant guard and run,” the affidavit stated. His allegedly intended victim was not identified.
Officers searched his cell and found the weapon stashed between two chairs, the affidavit stated. Security video they reviewed showed Arnold stuffing something between the chairs where the shiv was located.
The affidavit did not reveal what material Arnold allegedly used to craft the weapon.
