The Pekin Daily Times is starting a new online component to its website called "What's Up Weekly." It will provide residents with a list of events happening around town. Genealogical and Historical Society
The next meeting of the Tazewell County Genealogical and Historical Society will take place Tuesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Ehrlicher Research Center, 719 N. 11th St., Pekin.
Dean Baker of Lincoln will discuss the history of coins and what we should be collecting to pass on to future generations. Dean has been collecting and studying money for over 50 years. Planting the Spanish Seed Storytime
This interactive program will introduce children ages 3-7 and their caregiver to español through books, songs, and activities. It will take place at 12:30 p.m., May 8. 31st Annual Wayno’s Rodeo
Please join family and friends, of the late Gary Uphoff on Friday, May 11, (5-8 p.m.) at Pekin’s McCritter’s, for the 11th annual silent auction, with all proceeds going to the Illini Bluffs High School Golf Program. Payment for the next day’s golf event will be collected and team foursomes will be drawn during the auction. If you can’t be there Friday night but wish to play the next day, just let us know. The 31st annual Wayno’s golf tournament, with tee times starting at 1 p.m at Pekin’s Sunset Golf Course, will be the next day, Saturday, May 12. The $65 fee includes 18 holes of golf, half cart, and an all-you-can-eat chicken dinner following the tournament at McCritter’s. North Pekin AMVETS Post 169 will be serving chicken, spaghetti, and catfish on Friday, May 11, at the Post Home, 660 Radio City Drive, Route 29, North Pekin. The Bachelors & Bachelorettes Square Dance Club will be hosting a May Festival at the Pekin Moose, 2605 Broadway St., Pekin, May 11-12. There will be no dance May 10 at the Miller Center. Prairie Wind Ensemble
The Prairie Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jim Tallman will celebrate the ensemble’s 40th Anniversary during a concert on Friday, May 11. The ensemble, in residence at Illinois Central College, will present this special concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the East Peoria campus. In addition to special C selections and former conductors, the concert will feature Amy Zhou, the Earl Barnes Student Soloist Competition winner as well as saxophone players from area high schools. Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors. Children under 12 are free. Tickets may be purchased through the Illinois Central College Performing Arts Center by phone (309-694-5136) or in person. There will be tickets available at the door the day of the performance.
United Way Friendship Day
The Pekin Church Women United May Friendship Day celebration will be held on Friday, May 11, at 1:15 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church, 503 N. 4th St. in Pekin.
Janet Homerin of Pekin Township will present the program. The Least Coin collection will be presented along with School Kits and Health Kits which are distributed
to Christian Civic Outreach, the Salvation Army, House of Hope, and the Veterans Assistance Program. All church women are invited to join the celebration.
