EAST PEORIA — Visitors to the city's official website Friday might have gotten the wrong idea about the availability for sale of garbage and recycling toter containers. The public works department, as it turns out, is not out of toters and has plenty to sell to the public.

"We are stocked with both toters," Public Works Director Dennis Barron said Friday. "The web site incorrectly said a delivery wouldn't be coming until mid-August. That (post) will be taken down."

The 96-gallon toters cost $60 each. They are not available from the city in any other size or at any other price. The city will deliver the containers to East Peoria residences at no charge, or they can be picked up at the public works department, 2232 E. Washington Street.

So far, the city has sold between 1,500 and 1,800 blue-lidded recycling toters out of its initial order of 3,100 containers, Barron said. Selling all of them would account for around 30 percent of all of the city's garbage collection customers. There is no additional fee for garbage or recycling pick-up.

The city switched earlier this month to an every-other-week pick-up schedule for recyclable materials in preparation for full implementation of the toter recycling service next summer. Only the recycling schedule has changed. Garbage will continue to be picked up every week.

While recycling is not mandatory, using a recycling toter with the blue lid will be required beginning next July. East Peoria residents who recycle can download a calendar and route list to see when their items will be picked up. The material can be viewed at the city's website, www.cityofeastpeoria.com.
