PEORIA — One person died early Friday after a stolen vehicle sped away from a would-be traffic stop and crashed at Glen Oak Park.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said 17-year-old Denardo Williams died at 2:21 a.m. at OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center. He had been ejected from the car, the coroner said. It wasn't known where Williams had been sitting in the vehicle prior to the crash.

Preliminary autopsy findings show he suffered severe head trauma, Harwood said. A toxicology report is pending.

At 1:37 a.m., a Peoria police officer tried to pull over a vehicle because of a traffic violation near East McClure and North Peoria avenues, said police spokeswoman Amy Dotson. A dispatcher then advised the officer that the vehicle was reported as stolen, Dotson said.

The driver failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed, Dotson said. The officer terminated the traffic stop and did not pursue the vehicle. The vehicle accelerated, vanishing from the officer's view, Dotson said.

Shortly thereafter, the vehicle crashed into a tree at the entrance of Glen Oak Park, Dotson said. An unknown male — apparently an occupant of the vehicle — was seen fleeing the scene, Dotson said.

On the ground at the crash site, officers found two additional occupants who had been ejected from the vehicle, Dotson said. The Peoria Fire Department and Advanced Medical Transport arrived. Williams and a 16-year-old girl were taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
