While a common expression is “do not run with scissors,” the employees of a local hair salon quickly moved into a larger space.
Twisted Scissors, located at 127 N. Main St., has been open for almost two years, and the owner, Tracy Hortman, is relatively new to the field.
“I don’t know why I decided to go into the business. I just always wanted to own a hair salon. Maybe I am just a girly girl,” said Hortman, who is originally from Georgia and located in East Peoria because of family in the area.
Hortman and manager Nicole Timian, a native of Pekin, run Twisted Scissors, which has six employees. The name of the salon was actually created by a regular client of Timian’s for the two beauticians.
Their clientele includes young, old, men, women, families and children, not to mention they come from all over the area to experience the salon.
To accommodate customers, Twisted Scissors recently moved, within the same shopping center, to expand space and services. After the new store was purchased, the renovations took just 30 days to complete. Twisted Scissors’ current salon opened in January with new equipment and stations.
While the salon has always offered full hair service, manicures and pedicures, there are new spa services available to customers as well.
“We added pedicure thrones and nail enhancements, acrylic and gel. Our acrylics are extensive and include nail art, diverse from other places in the area, and toe acrylics, which aren’t offered in many places,” said Timian.
Two tanning beds were moved from the original location. Tanning services will expand in the near future.
“We are going to add spray tanning to our list in the next few weeks, as soon as it is delivered to the salon. The spray tanning will be done by a professional, no booths here,” said Hortman.
Another feature provided by the salon is Princess Parties. Done on Sundays when the salon is usually closed, the party allows young girls to be the princesses for the day.
“The girls get the salons to themselves and we do their hair and nails. Every girl likes to play dress-up,” said Hortman.
The philosophy of the salon is to provide a comfortable and affordable salon for customers. Each month, there are new specials available to customers.
Both Hortman and Timian credit laid-back attitudes, a fun atmosphere and an understanding of the client’s wants to the success of the salon.
“We have people come in and hang out with us even if they aren’t getting their hair cut. That says a lot about our salon,” said Timian.
Twisted Scissors is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
