About 200 students took part in the International Edible Book Festival last week at East Peoria Community High School.

“We were surprised how many students got involved,” said the school’s librarian Charles Atteberry, adding it was the school’s first time taking part in the event. “It was my subtle attempt to encourage reading.”

The edible books ranged from “Tom Sawyer,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Shining.” The students worked in conjunction with the Foods and Nutrition classes at the high school to make their creations.

“We wanted to do a children’s book,” said Crandell. “But it really wasn’t easy. “
