Although none of the stores and buildings in East Peoria’s downtown development are scheduled to open for months, area residents can play a role in the shaping of the area.
City officials announced a contest Tuesday that allows residents to submit name suggestions for the entire downtown development area. The final name will be chosen by city council and city staff members.
Ty Livingston, the director of community development, planning and zoning, said that there are few parameters for the contest.
“(The contest) is pretty open,” he said on Feb. 16. “We didn’t want to put too many parameters to limit the creativity.”
The regulations for the contest are that the name encompass the entire region and that submitted ideas be in good taste. Logos can be included with the name, but are not required.
Livingston said that the competition would help bring the East Peoria community together.
“It’s all about engaging the community,” he said. “Here’s an opportunity to have community dialogue about the area and what it means to the residents.
The person who submits the winning entry will also remain a part of the downtown development. Signage recognizing the individual and an overnight stay at the Embassy Suites Hotel will be awarded to the winning entrant.
East Peoria’s downtown area will feature Target and Costco stores, a Holiday Inn hotel, a Morton Community Bank and Hometown Banking office building with retail space, a new building for the Fondulac District Library, a community civic center, retail areas and multi-residential buildings.
Included in the development is the first roundabout constructed in the Illinois Department of Transportation’s district four.
All submissions must include the entrant’s name, address, daytime telephone number and email address if available. They can be mailed to City of East Peoria Downtown Development Name, 100 S. Main St., East Peoria, IL 61611. Email submissions can be sent to MaureenGooding@CityofEastPeoria.com.
The deadline to submit entries is at 5 p.m. March 7.
