More than $1.3 million will be used to replace road signs around Central Illinois as part of a safety effort.

East Peoria will take the lead in distributing the federal money, which is part of the Highway Improvement Program, and funneled through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The money will be used to upgrade regulatory and warning signs on local roads. Governments involved include Pekin, Bartonville, Bellevue, Morton, North Pekin and South Pekin, as well as Hollis, Kickapoo, Limestone and Medina Townships. Each must provide a 10 percent match for any funds they receive.

The joint funding application was coordinated by the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission. A total of $1,327,388 is available.
