As East Peoria Community High School students were enjoying one of their last days of summer vacation, District 309 school board members were talking numbers.
The board adopted the tentative EPCHS Fiscal Year 2012 budget at the district’s Aug. 15 meeting.
“I really, really tried to give you a balanced budget, which is near impossible in this day and age,” said Superintendent Chuck Nagel. “But (Associate Superintendent) Josh (Ebener) and I are going to continue to work with it and see if we can’t get it balanced out.”
Nagel said there is a negative variance in the education fund of about $647,000, with expenditures expected to be at $10.6 million and revenue at just under $10 million.
The other funds, including building, transportation, site and development and life safety, Nagel said are currently “in the black.”
As the fiscal agent for the Tazewell-Mason County Special Education Association, the board also adopted the TMCSEA Fiscal Year 20112 tentative budget at the meeting.
A public hearing for each budget is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Sept. 19.
In other business, the board:
• Held a Bond Interest Notification Act hearing where Board President Steve Matheny explained the purpose of the alternate revenue bonds being sought in an amount not to exceed $3 million.
“The purpose of these alternate revenue bonds are for remodeling, repairing, reconstructing, renovating and further equipping the existing East Peoria High School including demolition, acquisition of land or rights of land and landscaping or grounds work necessary, useful or advisable for such purposes.”
A special meeting of the board is scheduled for 5 p.m., Aug. 29 to seek formal approval of the bonds.
• Approved fall athletic season ticket prices at $4 for adult entry, $2 for non-EPCHS student entry and free for EPCHS students. Season passes are $18 for football, $35 for volleyball and $50 for football/volleyball combination. All other fall sport entry is free.
• Approved the resignations of Carola Maitland, Nicole Prewett as cafeteria workers, Ben Jackson as second-shift custodian and Erin Glover as secretary.
• Approved the employment of Scott Peterson as teacher’s aide and Justin Yang as assistant football coach.
• Heard from Nagel that a complaint made to the Office of Civil Rights regarding the school’s handling of a suspended student has been thrown out.
“A complainant had charged the district with a biased form of enforcing discipline based on race, creed or color,” Nagel said. “The Office of Civil Rights has thrown out the case based on lack of evidence. Their stance was that the situation was handled perfectly. I congratulate our deans for the way they handled that.”
