April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, helping bring much-needed attention to this chronic, progressive neurological disease that affects movement, speaking and cognitive function. More than one million Americans live with Parkinson's Disease and it is important that we use this month to celebrate, commemorate and educate the public and our elected officials about Parkinson's and the need for a cure. As we join together with one voice, we look forward with hope to the day when Parkinson's will be no more.

I, along with the Central Illinois Parkinson's Support Group, would like to thank Sen. Dave Koehler for sponsoring Senate resolution 58 and Jehan Gordon and Michael Unes for sponsoring House resolution 84 declaring April as Parkinson's Awareness Month in the state of Illinois.

I want to encourage Senators Dick Durbin, Mark Kirk and Rep. Aaron Schock to support biomedical research that can lead to better treatments and a cure for Parkinson's. Their leadership is important to me and the entire Parkinson's community.
