Donate Life month perfect time to step up and give a new life to others

People often donate their time, their money and their effort to causes they find worthy, but one that is going unnoticed is organ donations.

According to Donate Life America, an average of 18 people die each day while waiting on the organ transplant list. Currently, there are more than 100,000 men, women and children in need of life-saving organ transplants, and every 10 minutes another name is placed on the list.

From the Vault: New terms change, some stories remain

In my second installment of “From the Vault,” we will travel back to May 2, 1957.

The Tazewell Courier’s front page headlines read: “Sewer Plan Balloting in Creve Coeur June 4,” “Book circulation reaches 39,787 at E. Peoria Library report indicates,” “Charges against Linehan might be dismissed,” and “City (East Peoria) nets $6,268 in sales taxes.”

To put it into perspective, today East Peoria receives $10,709,000 in sales tax annually.

Out of those headlines, I was most curious about the charges.

Ugly speech deserves protection

The first amendment says the peoples’ right to free speech shall not be abridged. That does not mean just popular speech, but all speech. For that reason the recent Supreme Court decision to side with protesters at military funerals was the right one.

From the Vault: Looking back at Tazewell County

History is fun, especially when it is easily accessible.

We have several old binders at our office filled with newspapers from the past. They sit on a shelf, undisturbed.

I’ve been thinking about taking them off the shelf and exploring their contents for some time.
It may be the thought of spring’s arrival that is motivating me because one of these big books is now open on my desk.

Releasing gun owners’ names a bad idea

It seems as if Illinois likes being the exception when it comes to gun laws.

The Land of Lincoln is currently one of two states without any kind of concealed carry policy, and if Attorney General Lisa Madigan has her way, the state will be an exception in another category.

New bill would curtail public notices

What’s not to like about a proposed state law that would absolve local governments from paying to print public notices in local newspapers?

Plenty.

Library Lines: Fondulac's eBook circulation more than doubles in January

Given the influx of post-holiday eReader and smartphone owners, it is no surprise that downloads from Fondulac District Library’s electronic collection, Alliance Digital Media Library, have surged. January’s checkouts of downloadable books were more than twice those of December and were the highest since the library began offering the service one year ago.

Quinn needs to practice what he preaches

Since stepping out of Rod Blagojevich’s shadow and into the governor’s office, Gov. Pat Quinn has used strong language to separate him from the state’s controversial former governor.

“We know very well that our government suffered an integrity crisis prior to my … assuming office,” Quinn said in his inauguration address in January. “And I’m here today to say that we’ve restored integrity and honesty in the office of governor.”

With great power comes great responsibility

While health care, the job market and the economy seem to be at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds at the moment, one topic is slowly gaining steam in the public realm — concealed carry.

Why no Taste of East Peoria?

The Taste of Peoria is today.

The Taste of Washington was two weeks ago. And the Taste of Morton was in May.

Admiring pioneer life from a distance

Whenever I travel somewhere, I really get caught up in the feel of the place.

Rather than buying T-shirts with a state name on them, I buy historical books so I know some of what happened there.

Lifes' milestones change after age 25

Despite the fact that I hate aging, I love to write about getting older; I don’t know why.

The Three R’s of Brownfields — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Sound familiar?  The “three R’s” of recycling – reduce, reuse, and recycle – can also be applied to brownfield redevelopment.

Take time to appreciate family

Last weekend, the Kendall clan gathered for our second family reunion at West Park in East Peoria.

West Park has a beautiful shelter that is uniquely painted and the view on top of the hill along Springfield Road is pretty spectacular.

Turn off engine, help environment

Here is a very simple tip to help the environment, improve people’s health and save money: Turn your vehicle’s engine OFF anytime it is not in motion.

It has been shown in studies that more fuel is used in 10 seconds of idling than it takes to restart your car. It is harder on the exhaust system, cylinders and spark plugs to idle.

TimesNewspapers’ intern says goodbye

Four years ago, when making the life-changing decision of what career to pursue, journalism was a popular suggestion from my friends and family. Those who know me best saw me as the talkative, investigative person, who loved my time working with my high school publications.

Take time to grow your own

Lately in the news I have been hearing about how everyone should reduce their carbon footprint. One of the suggested ways is to buy locally grown vegetables when they are in season. I am going to suggest that you go one step further and grow your own vegetables. If you have a location in your yard that gets six to eight hours of sunlight, you have the perfect spot.

Green team envisions landscaping Downtown 2010

Budding trees, birds chirping, colorful daffodils and tulips waving in the warm breezes. These are visions of spring, the season that promises renewal and rebirth, our reward for enduring another winter in Central Illinois.

Have your heard? There is a promise of a new life, the Phoenix rising up from a vacant 88 acre piece of land once occupied by Caterpillar Inc. factories and offices, as it is developed into East Peoria’s Downtown 2010.

With spring comes new programs, publications

March is here … spring is just around the corner! It was a tough winter, but we’re gearing up for a lot of fun events at the library. Our story hours are still going on this month.

The children’s staff is busily preparing for the summer reading program. This year’s theme is Scare Up a Good Book. The program begins June 1 and runs the entire months of June and July.
