How many times do you complain about the high cost of electricity and gas utilities?
Well, there is something you can do about it, and it comes at a very low cost to you, the homeowner.
Just dig out that old abused caulk gun, and pick up a few tubes of caulk. Now the fun part begins. Climb into that attic space of your home and start looking for spider webs. Yes, I said spider webs.
You are now asking yourself, “What do spider webs have to do with energy costs?” Well, the simple truth is, they build their webs in air streams so prey will fly into their webs.
Stop the air flow and you reduce your energy bills but also get rid of a spider or two along the way. A caulk gun is safer than cans of foam, whether it is the low-expanding or the expanding kind.
If you want to try your luck with foam, then make some small boxes and try to foam them without the foam coming out of the box. Do not foam closed areas unless you want to do repair work.
Once the foam hardens, it will push out wall boards, plaster or dry wall boards. The caulk gun is the best tool for stopping air flow, which, in turn, stops energy loss. Start in the attic, and work your way down through the house.
They also make little foam pads that you can put behind wall outlets on your outside walls that will reduce air flow through the wall outlets and switch plates.
Stopping the air flow from outside to inside in the winter and preventing the cool air from escaping in the summer reduces your utility bill. So, dust off the old caulk gun and get busy, you will save some money in the long run.
