The East Peoria Community High School football team qualified for the Illinois High School Association playoffs in Class 5A.
This is quite an accomplishment, as this has not happened since 1989.
East Peoria (5-4) will face Mid-Illini Conference rival Washington (8-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Panthers’ Babcook Field.
Also, the East Peoria boys and girls cross country teams run in their own sectional Saturday morning at Illinois Central College.
The girls’ race is set for 10:30 a.m., with the boys to follow at 11:30 a.m.
These three teams deserve praise and recognition, which surely they are getting from parents, coaches and teachers and likely some residents who simply like sports.
But this praise should not stop in the halls of the high school and on the playing fields. It should extend throughout the community.
Business leaders can show support by posting messages on their signs. Residents can attend the games or simply send a congratulation note to the high school.
A little praise goes a long way, and a team will likely perform better with a support system.
