Who says nothing in life is for free?
In East Peoria, there is something for free.
The Elm Ridge Southern Missionary Baptist Church, 737 Illinois St., East Peoria, is offering free clothes and free school supplies from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 1. The event is open to the community.
Another church, Roland Manor Baptist in Sunnyland, is offering a free clothing closet Aug. 22 and Sept. 19. The event is listed in the Around Town section on Page 6.
In the past there have been other local churches, such as the Highview Church of God on Centennial Drive, that offered free clothing give-a-ways more than once.
These are very positive actions in trying economic times.
It seems everywhere one turns today, prices are going up on necessities, such as gas, groceries and electricity.
Clothing and school supplies may be hard to come by for some families this year.
Church groups are not the only ones who can provide relief to those in need.
Residents may donate school supplies at the Fondulac District Library.
Library director Amy Falasz-Peterson said this is the third year library staff has collected school supplies for District 86 and Robein District 85. Falasz-Peterson is right when she said it is a great way to give back to the community. To see a list of needed supplies on the children’s page on the library’s Web site, visit www.fondulaclibrary.org.
These individuals and groups who band together to offer something to those in need are to be commended. Hopefully, others will take notice and follow suit.
A lyric in the song “Money (That’s What I Want)” states, “The best things in life are free.”
Some of these things are love, kindness and generosity toward fellow man.
