Pekin, Ill. -

East Peoria’s senior stalwarts produced the desired results Saturday at Pekin.

Raider wrestlers Cody Largent and Nate Joseph won Mid-Illini Conference championships at Saturday’s seven-team league tournament.

The tandem was awarded for the fourth time this winter after first-place showings at Chatham Glenwood, Metamora and Quincy.

Largent and Joseph both will be first-team all-conference selections.

Largent (27-1) prevailed 7-3 over Bobby Meeks of Metamora in his only bout of the day in 119 pounds.

Joseph (29-0) used a pair of pins in the 215 bracket to stay undefeated on the season.

He took out Cody Stewart of Washington and Limestone’s Dan McGarr to earn his second consecutive M-I title.

East Peoria was sixth overall as a team for the season with five points, combining its 2-4 dual mark and sixth-place tournament outcome at Dawson Hawkins Gymnasium.

The Raiders’ 81 points were only three behind fifth-place Metamora in the league finale.

Three other East Peoria grapplers also ended their day with a victory.

Conrad Bray, Nick Philyaw and Lucas Joseph each wound up third.

Bray, a junior, won three of his four matches in 152, capped by a 14-4 major decision over Wes Johnson of Metamora.

Philyaw, a senior, recorded three pins in the 160 class. He also thwarted a Redbird, Kyle Harper, to help the Raiders.

Joseph, a freshman, provided two pins surrounding a semifinal loss in 189 before a 6-0 win against Pekin’s Austin Darm locked up third place.

Nick Stetler, Joe Warren, David Haldeman and Billy Newport also competed for Phil Johns-coached East Peoria.

Washington claimed the first conference wrestling title in school history. Defending champ Pekin was second.

Morton was third, followed by Canton, which passed Metamora for fourth place. Limestone was seventh for the third year in a row.

Postseason: East Peoria participates Saturday in the nine-team Class 2A Washington Regional.

The field consists of the five M-I members in 2A, plus Peoria schools Notre Dame, Richwoods, Woodruff and Central.

Session I is set for 10 a.m. with Session II to follow at 2:30 p.m.

The top three individuals advance to the Feb. 12-13 Sterling Sectional.
