Moving in the middle: Hannah Crebo, left, an East Peoria sophomore midfielder, figures to be a key contributor for the girls soccer team this season. The Raiders, who were 2-13-3 in 2009, open their campaign tomorrow at EastSide Centre vs. Galesburg.

The East Peoria girls soccer team is working diligently to try to produce a satisfying 2010 season.

The Raiders are aiming to improve on last year’s 2-13-3 overall record and 0-10-2 Mid-Illini Conference mark, which was good for seventh place.

“The girls have been working extremely hard and worked hard in the offseason to prepare themselves for this upcoming season,” EPCHS head coach Heather Forsyth said.

Among the key players Forsyth listed are: senior midfielder/defender Rebekah Minter, senior sweeper Lillian Sheppard, junior forward Becca Britton and sophomore midfielder Hannah Crebo.

Minter and Sheppard are team captains.

Nicki Alwan, a junior, is the East Peoria goalkeeper.

The defense is an area of strength, Forsyth said, with its experience and depth.

The rest of the varsity roster includes: seniors — Alejandra Martell, Alisha Frick, Amy Mach, Molly Arnold, Jamie Lovell, Sarah Thompson, Megan Heflin and Ruth Riggenbach; juniors — Mia Bowman, Lisa Kay, Lauren Bernard and Megan Mally; and sophomores — Katelin Beckner, Courtney Clark and Britt Jones.

The Raiders are hopeful they can get turned around this spring.

“The team is very optimistic coming into this season. We have set team goals for the season and are ready for the season to get under way,” said Forsyth.

Eight-time defending champion Morton and Pekin are the teams expected to lead the conference. They finished one-two a year ago after going a combined 19-2-3.

East Peoria tied sixth-place Limestone twice last season. Overall, nine M-I games ended in a deadlock in ’09.

“I feel like we are going to be competitive this year and get a few more conference wins,” Forsyth said.

The Raiders’ season begins tomorrow with a home game against Galesburg.

The non-conference schedule remains the same except Riverton moves up from early May to early April.
