State Rep. Mike Unes (R-East Peoria) called Gov. Quinn’s State of the State Address “a mile wide and an inch deep” in regards to fixing our state’s fiscal problems.

“I welcome the Governor’s call to work together, just as legislators did in the House this past year on the budget,” said Unes on Wednesday after the address. “However, he skimmed past the necessary reforms, and I never once heard him mention the nearly $9 billion deficit in our state. We’re going to have to dig much deeper for the solutions to these problems caused by years of mismanagement by state officials.”

“I was pleased that the Governor recognized that Medicaid fraud is a serious problem in our state. However, the Governor did not give credit to the legislature for passing Medicaid reform over the past two sessions that his administration did not fight to implement with the federal government,” said Rep. Unes.

These reforms aimed to ensure that those on Medicaid are Illinois residents and also meet the programs’ income eligibility requirements. The Medicaid Payment Recapture Audit would have recaptured up to an estimated 10 percent of our total Medicaid cost through identifying such fraud and other errors.

Rep. Unes also said it was ironic that Quinn touted a job-friendly state, when in reality the corporate tax increase and income tax hike have proven the opposite.

“Gov. Quinn talked about growing the tax base,” said Rep. Unes. “But the best way to do that is to reverse the tax policies he’s put into place. I have said from the beginning the tax increases were a mistake, and the Governor must recognize the need to right this wrong."
