GOODFIELD — A 50-year-old semi truck driver from Sacramento, Calif., escaped injury Tuesday when his cab caught fire at 12:55 p.m. on eastbound I-74 at mile marker 116 in Goodfield.
The driver was able to safely pull on to the shoulder of the highway and exit the cab before it became fully engulfed in flames. The load the semi was hauling was not hazardous and didn’t contain flammable material.
The fire on the side of the highway forced the closure of the eastbound lanes of I-74 and caused a miles-long back-up of traffic. With the assistance of Illinois Department of Transportation, the eastbound lanes of I-74 were being diverted at the Goodfield exit at mile marker 112.
