SPRINGFIELD — The section of Illinois Route 116 between Roanoke and Metamora will likely be named after a fallen soldier who graduated Roanoke-Benson High School.

Under a resolution passed in the state Senate unanimously last week and set for consideration in the House, the roadway will bear the name of Army Specialist Phillip Pannier, who was killed in action Jan. 8, 2008, serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“It’s always important that we remember the dedication and sacrifice of those who have given their lives to protect our way of life,” said state Sen. Jason Barickman, who sponsored the measure. “It is my hope that this memorial will help keep Phillip’s memory alive for future generations.”

The legislation is Senate Joint Resolution 9.
