EAST PEORIA — The new recycling toters are in.
"We're getting the first shipment out to customers right away," East Peoria Public Works Director Dennis Barron said Monday. "If they pre-ordered a toter they should be getting it this week or next week."
A semi delivered the first 624 blue-lidded recycling receptacles on Friday. As of Monday afternoon, East Peoria residents had purchased 589 toters. City employees have begun to deliver toters to customers on the the "A" week schedule of garbage pickup and should get their new receptacle this week on the day their garbage is regularly picked up by the city. "B" week customers should receive their new recycling toter next week, Barron said.
The new 96-gallon toters will replace the old recycling bins and can be used right away. East Peoria is phasing in its expanded recycling program. While recycling will not be mandatory, anyone who wishes to recycle must use a new toter with a blue lid beginning July 2019.
The first 1,000 toters purchased will have “Recycling Champion” stickers on them, signifying those residents’ support of recycling. The new toters can be used as soon as they are received.
Recycling collection will change to every other week effective July 9. Residents will be notified when their recycling week is before July 9. The new toters replace the small 18-gallon red or blue recycling bins. Residents can use the small bins for storing their recycling material, keep them for personal use, or recycle the bins by putting them in the new toter.
Customers with new recycling toters may begin to include glass jars and bottles with their recyclables. No sorting is necessary.
Toters cost $60 and may be purchased at the city's website, www.cityofeastpeoria.com, or at the public works department on Washington Street. Those who have several garbage toters now can save the cost of a new one by painting a toter lid blue and turning it into a recycling toter. Those purchasing a toter will receive it approximately two weeks after placing the online order.
