EAST PEORIA — A new way to provide urgent medical care for OSF HealthCare consumers is coming to the Levee District.

A sign for OSF urgo — apparently a mashed-up, made-up word meaning urgent care on the go — has been attached to the front of a commercial building off of Spinder Drive. The building, next to T-Mobile, is in East Peoria's built-from-scratch commercial district. Construction is underway inside.

"(OSF) is in the process of fitting out a suite in the newer building which also houses T-Mobile next to Panda Express," said Ty Livingston, the city's director of planning. "As I understand it, medical uses in a traditional retail setting is a trend nationwide."

OSF spokeswoman Shelli Dankoff said Thursday that officials were not yet ready to fully describe the urgo concept, or where else the urgent care facilities might be located in the area which apparently includes the city of Peoria. They issued a statement instead.

"The OSF HealthCare Ministry is excited to be able to grow health care delivery options in communities where we have been called to serve," the statement read. "More information about specific services to be offered in East Peoria and Peoria will be forthcoming. We look forward to sharing it!”

OSF did share details in May with the media in Champaign where there are also plans to open multiple OSF urgo facilities.

According to the Champaign News-Gazette, OSF urgo facilities will welcome patients of all ages, but are being designed to especially cater to younger adults ages 25-40. Each urgo location will be about 3,000 square feet and will have four examination  rooms and X-ray and lab services. Each will treat largely the same kinds of ailments and illnesses commonly treated at urgent and convenient care centers, like the OSF PromptCare facilities in the area, according to the News-Gazette article.

"One of the things we hope to achieve is to create a relationship with a demographic we don't have a relationship with," Melinda Cooling, OSF vice president of advanced practice providers told the News-Gazette.

Three OSF urgo centers are expected to open in the Champaign area this fall. There is no information available about when the East Peoria OSF urgo is expected to open to the public.
