A 72-year-old man will serve jail and probation terms for setting his Delavan home on fire to pay his casino gambling debts.
John Harrison was sentenced Friday to 10 days behind bars and two years of probation with his guilty plea to arson, punishable by up to seven years in prison.
An investigation into the fire in July 2017 determined it had been deliberately set, a prosecutor’s court affidavit stated. Harrison later acknowledged he lit a candle in the home to burn it down. He filed an insurance claim the next day.
The probe revealed Harrison and his wife appeared to be gambling addicts, the affidavit stated. Harrison told police the couple, unable to afford needed home repairs, had been living for some times with relatives and at an Iowa casino.
Harrison’s wife was not charged in the case.
