PEKIN — Republican Charlie Hanley has defeated Democrat Chuck Friend in the race for Tazewell County Coroner.
Hanley collected 34,317 votes to Friend's 16,289, or about 68 percent to 32 percent of the vote. Official poll results reported a voter turnout of 57.6 percent of Tazewell County’s 90,595 registered voters.
“I’m humbled by all the support from Tazewell County residents for believing in me and my campaign,” he said. “I look forward to serving the people of Tazewell County as their next coroner.”
Hanley will replace Brian Foley, who became interim county coroner in March when Jeff Baldi stepped down from the position.
Hanley will hold an elected office for the first time, having worked for 22 years as a funeral director and embalmer. He hopes to educate area youth on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and introduce operating cost controls to the coroner’s office.
“With things around the county getting tight budget-wise, I believe I can keep expenses in check,” he said.
