MONMOUTH — Peoria police took apart a suspicious container found Friday night at a Monmouth intersection, according to authorities.
The apparently homemade container was found about 5 p.m. on the ground next to a utility pole at C Street and Franklin Avenue, a Monmouth police news release stated.
Monmouth police were investigating a vehicle accident at the intersection when they were alerted to the suspicious package.
They notified their Peoria colleagues, who have special means of handling such potentially hazardous material.
The container was poorly constructed, according to the release.
Peoria officers traveled about 70 miles west. Meanwhile, Monmouth police closed the area to traffic. A public park is located at the intersection.
After it was determined the device posed a low risk, Peoria police dismantled it, the release stated.
The device and its contents were to undergo forensic examination.
The Warren County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police and Monmouth Fire Department also assisted.
Authorities were continuing to investigate.
