PEORIA – The Center for Prevention of Abuse is now accredited to teach cosmetologists to recognize abuse.

“Cosmetologists, aestheticians, nail technicians, and others in the beauty industry are in a unique position to receive or hear domestic violence or sexual assault disclosures,” said Carol Merna, the center's chief executive officer. “Educating those in contact with survivors about indicators of domestic violence and sexual assault, how to safely respond, and about available resources is an important step in supporting survivors in our community. As a leading victim-service agency, the Center for Prevention of Abuse is proud to have received our state accreditation so we can help cosmetologists in Central Illinois meet this state mandate.”

As of Jan. 1 a new Illinois law requires a one-hour, one time continuing education course for cosmetology licensees seeking license renewal.

The training takes one hour, costs $20 a person, and is offered at center, 720 W. Joan Court. For more information visit under “training opportunities,” or call Joyce DeRenzy at 691-0551.
