PEORIA — The long-vacant site of various Vonachen restaurants next to Junction City Shopping Center soon might be filled.
An OSF Urgo facility is envisioned for the green space at Knoxville Avenue and Prospect Road, according to plans filed with the city.
OSF Urgo, an urgent-care arm of Peoria-based OSF HealthCare, is to occupy one of two buildings planned for the old Vonachen's site.
The other building can accommodate medical or retail outlets or a combination of both, according to Tom Leiter, a Peoria attorney who represents Junction City.
During its meeting Thursday, the municipal Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the City Council approve land-use changes that would facilitate the project.
On May 28, the council is expected to consider the recommendation.
Late restaurateur/raconteur Pete Vonachen established an eatery at the Knoxville-Prospect junction in 1956.
Known for its railroad cars converted to dining rooms, Vonachen's Old Place closed in 2008. The facility was razed thereafter.
OSF Urgo has nine offices in Illinois, including two in Peoria and one each in East Peoria and Washington.
