TAZEWELL COUNTY - The public is welcome to view a Medal of Honor at the Tazewell County Clerk & Recorder of Deeds Office, 11 S. 4th St., during normal business hours.
According to a press release issued by Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman, the medal was given to Dr. Thomas Murphy, formerly of Green Valley and Hopedale, in June of 1916, and is one of only 3,522 ever received. Murphy received the medal for his actions on May 22, 1863, during the Siege of Vicksburg.
The medal will be available for viewing until Friday afternoon, when it will be escorted to the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office. The medal will then be a part of an Honor Ceremony for Murphy. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. May 18 at the Green Valley Cemetery. Tazewell County Civil War veterans and Medal of Honor recipients John Ayers and William Reed, who are buried outside of Illinois.
Following the event on Saturday, the Medal of Honor will be given to the Tazewell County Museum & Educational Center as a permanent museum exhibit.
