The season is over for the Pekin wrestling team.
All six Dragons who competed Saturday in the Class 3A Alton Individual Sectional failed to advance to the state meet. But they went down fighting.
"The guys wrestled the best they could," said Pekin coach John Jacobs.
Ryan Haynes (113) advanced the furthest of the six. He split his four matches and was eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance from sectionals to state.
"Ryan was in a buzzsaw weight class," Jacobs said. "He faced the defending state champion at 106 in the wrestleback round."
That wrestler is Jake Lindsey from New Lenox Providence Catholic. Lindsey beat Haynes 7-1 in the consolation quarterfinals.
Pekin's Drake Hawkins (120), Brody Haynes (145) and Tyler Siddles (195) each won one of his three sectional matches. Jared Dowell (170) and Andrew Krahn (220) each lost both their matches.
Brody Haynes, Siddles and Krahn are seniors. Brody Haynes ended his Pekin career with a 77-33 record. He missed most of his freshman season because of an elbow injury.
Jacobs said Siddles wrestled "lights out" Saturday in a tough weight class.
Ryan Haynes and Dowell are sophomores. Hawkins is a freshman.
"Hopefully the sectional opened their eyes," Jacobs said about the underclassmen.
"They all should know what they need to do in the off-season to compete at the same level as the guys they saw at the sectional."
Hawkins, Brody Haynes and Siddles went to the sectional as regional champions. Of the six Dragons who advanced to sectionals, only Ryan Haynes was a repeat sectional qualifier.
Here are Pekin's sectional qualifiers and their final season records: Ryan Haynes (35-7), Hawkins (31-10), Brody Haynes (28-12), Dowell (22-11), Siddles (32-9) and Krahn (21-20).
