The Richwoods boys swimming and diving team ended a 16-year drought when the Knights tied Normal West for the Big 12 Conference title on Saturday at Central Park Pool.
The teams tied for the team title with 228 points after the Wildcats won the final event of the day — the 400 free relay. It was the first conference title for the Richwoods swimmers since 2003.
Normal West won the 400 free relay in 3:21.27, while Richwoods took second in 3:23.40 after an anchor leg of :47.46 by senior Daniel Matlock.
"Going into the last race of the day, if we won the race, we would have won the title outright," Knights coach Lynn Thompson said. "If we got second, we knew we were going to tie.
"But as long as we got second, we would have a share of the conference championship. Obviously, we were going for the win, but we didn’t. But my boys gave it the best shot they had."
NW ended up winning five events, Normal Community (which finished third) three, and Richwoods two. Both wins for the Knights were by Matlock, in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.
