PEKIN — In an effort to better protect area residents against identity theft, State Rep. Mike Unes, R-East Peoria, is partnering with the City of Pekin in hosting a Free Paper Shredding Event on Aug. 16 in front of Pekin City Hall on Capitol Street.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon in front of Pekin City Hall, 111 S. Capitol St. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary.

“This is a great, free way for the public to safely shred and recycle sensitive documents that identity thefts could utilize in identity theft crimes,” said Unes.

The event will allow area residents to dispose of up to two paper boxes per person of sensitive documents. The shred truck will shred the documents on location and will haul away the shredded papers to be recycled. Those residents wishing to participate can load their papers and follow the marked pathway along Capitol Street in front of City Hall. Parking is available for those who want to watch documents being shredded, otherwise there is a marked pathway lane that residents may remain in their car while volunteers unload their documents to be disposed.

“I am thankful that AT&T has agreed to underwrite the cost for this event so my office and the City of Pekin can offer this free event to area residents,” said Unes.
