Backyard Talent Show back for an encore

MORTON —  The kids are all right.

They’ll return to the stage at the Idlewood Park pavilion in Morton on July 22 for the 11th annual Backyard Talent Show for St. Jude, a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

About 20 acts -- young singers, dancers, tumblers and other entertainers who have collected donations for St. Jude -- are on the playbill.

The show will start at 6 p.m. Concessions will be available and face-painting will start at 5 p.m. All the money from concession sales goes to St. Jude.

For the second year, there will be a fundraising competition at the show between Morton and Washington high school sports teams.

Last year, football players were involved. This year, it’s the boys basketball teams’ turn.

Once again, the winning group of athletes will toss whipped cream pies into the faces of the losers on stage. Washington won last year’s competition.

Morton coach Matt Franks said his team’s five seniors will represent Morton.

“We’re grateful to be involved in such a great event for St. Jude,” he said. “Doing things like this gives our guys some perspective and makes them appreciate what they have.”

Jarrett Crider, Barik Olden, Eric Hanson, Logan Mooberry and Jack Brennan are Morton’s seniors.

In keeping with the “One Team. One Dream” sports theme of this year’s Backyard Talent Show, Bradley men’s basketball players will be available for meet-and-greets and photos from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Admission to the show is free, but donations are accepted. Spectators should bring lawn chairs.

Show founders and longtime organizers Maddie and Isabelle Kolvek of Morton and their twin cousins, Claire and Katie Geier of Washington, are in college. They passed the show’s reins this year to the Jenkins, McDougall, Wiegardt and Ozella families from Morton and Washington.

The four families have 15 children between them and two families have a child who was a St. Jude patient.

From a modest start at the Kolvek home, the show has raised nearly $150,000 for St. Jude.
